The second best average since the championship unification into a single class in 2005 has been recorded this year by the new European Champion David Vršecký. In the nine champion races he scored 414 points, which represents a respectable mean of 45.5 points per racing weekend!
David has thus exceeded last year ´s score of his fellow trucker of the team and this year ´s vice champion Markus Bösiger by 36 points and the gain of Antonio Albacete in 2006 season by 68 points. To stay objective we need to remind that in 2006 the European Cup series only consisted of eight racing weekends as the Nürburgring race was held as International Championship of Germany.
Thus the only defeater of Vršecký has been Antonio Albacete, who in the very first season in the Race Truck class managed to collect the respectable 463 points, representing the incredible 46.3 points per race. At the same time Albacete set a still undefeated record of eight cup victories in a season. Last year the record was first equaled by Markus Bösiger, who, however, was disqualified from the Sunday cup race in Most, together with Vršecký and Albacete, after equaling the record!
"Was I really so close to equaling the modern Race Truck record? If I had known that, I would have approached the Sunday with more responsibility and not with a view to prefer certainty over risking," joked David Vršecký. "Whenever I decided to try Antonio, I received an instruction from the pits to stay calm. It is hard to break records then."
Even though David certainly did not mean to reduce Albacete ´s performance in the first unified season, he had to remind that Antonio held all aces in his hand that year. "He received a truck that hardly lost a cup race in the previous four seasons, while Buggyra lived through its very first racing season, with minimum experience in live racing", explained the new king of truck racing Europe adding that in the next season he will try to improve Albacete ´s record. But regarding the fact that Vršecký experienced an exceptionally successful season this year, this task will be very difficult. Or to be more precise, it will be a task worth the champion!
