A1-Ring 2003

3rd Race of the FIA European Truck Racing Cup 2003

The Austrian circuit has the reputation of having unpredictable weather. It located in the mountains in the altitude of around 800 metres where splendid blue skies can change in few minutes into dark clouds with thunder and lightning. The practice sessions of Saturday were very bright for our team, in particular as regards the performance of both our pilots and all Buggyra trucks. David won two free practices and Gerd won one. The third in the leading group was always Antonio Albacete with his red Buggyra. The three of them confirmed the fantastic performance in the timed practice. During the most of the period of 40 minutes of the practice Gerd was leading and in the end the pole position was clearly for him. David presented himself again in an excellent manner. He was able to steadily make good times and finished with the loss of 0.2 second just behind Gerd. So Buggyras took all top positions and for the first time Gerd and David were alongside of each other in the first row of the grid. Young pilot Adam Lacko from Tatra team initially seemed to be also very successful having won a struggle for the fifth place over experienced Finnish pilot Harri Luostarinen. However, later on it came out that he exceeded the speed limit of 160 km/h and therefore his position was lost.

The start of the qualifying race of Sunday went on as planned. Gerd immediately got to first place and David kept the second. However, in the first bend he wanted to follow behind Gerd in order to avoid the outer radius and during the manoeuvre he touched Albacete. The Spaniard had no major problems after the collision but David remained standing across the track. Östreich and Luostarinen got involved as well but managed to leave quickly afterwards. The bend remained clear and the race could continue without any interruption. At that moment the leading pilots were one third of the lap away and David dropped to place seven. The group of the three delayed pilots managed to overtake only Monfrin from France. Gerd clearly won ahead of Albacete. Lacko was surprisingly third, taking the advantage of the initial collision.

In the final race Gerd was also the one with the best start. There was a considerable struggle just behind him. David wanted to avoid the collision once more in the first bend and overtook three pilots out of the marked track. Although this way he managed to get to second place, going through the finish line of the first lap he was immediately penalized with stop and go. In the next lap he duly made the pit stop which pushed him back to place seven. In lap 18 of 22 Gerd lost his leading position due to turbocharger defect. As problems continued he continued to be pushed down in the ranking. In the same lap Albacete also lost the lead because of problems with electric installation. The way to victory for Östreich was open. Luostarinen got to second place and David was following him. Unfortunately, after a while blue and white smoke signalling turbocharger failure occurred behind his truck as well and he had to visit the pits. In the last but one lap Luostarinen also got in technical troubles and in the end Lacko took the silver wreath! Gerd was classified fourth one lap behind and David fifth two laps behind.

In total ranking Gerd is second ten points behind Östreich. David is fifth.
