7th Race of the FIA European Truck Racing Cup 2002

Together with Nürburgring the event in Most belong to the highlights of each season. Therefore Martin Koloc decided to include a mountain training camp in the total framework of preparation for this event. The training camp took place in Rejdice in the mountains of Jizerské hory (Isergebirge). The objective was to improve the physical fitness of David and the instructors were Martin and Petr Marek. The exercises included biking, jogging and body building. Just prior to the race Martin, David, Gerd and Martin Matzke, the junior of the team, went for several days of rehabilitation to Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad). The pleasant environment of the spa was also used for tactical preparation.

Afterwards they were able to arrive to Most in excellent condition with a commitment to show maximum performance both to Czech spectators and to the German fans, who are traditionally present in large numbers. Gerd started fast enough right on Saturday morning in the first time practice, which he won 0.35 second ahead of Luostarinen, the current of leader of the Championship. David made sixth best time in the competition of eight trucks. It has to be noted that the greatest rival of David, Stanislav Matějovský, did not participate in Most. The injury of the right leg did not allow him to join the race and therefore his place in the Tatra was taken by Ludovic Faure from France. Gerd was the fastest also in the second and the third practice, leading by about half of a second. David held the fifth or sixth place alternatively with Faure. Both Buggyras started the decisive one-hour time practice only at the time when the other pilots had already finished three to four laps. Thus both Gerd and David knew very well what times they need to make in order to obtain good positions. Gerd was smartly pursuing this objective and got to the leading position right after the first lap. After having completed the next lap his new time was even better. Then he could go to the pits with full satisfaction. During three laps David got to fifth place. However, towards the end of the practice Bösiger from Switzerland assumed the leading position and Gerd was forced to fight again for the best time. A single lap was sufficient to retake the victory. This time nobody else was able to beat him by the end of the practice. David finished on place six but he climbed one notch, because FIA commissioners cancelled the results of Bösiger. The reason was that his GPS system was turned off during approximately one quarter of the practice period and thus his speed could not have been recorded on the basis of changes of the position of his truck.

Nobody was able to beat Gerd in the warm-up of Sunday either. With great excitement we were watching the final two races for the Championship points. The dominance of the silver Buggyra continued in the qualifying race as well. Gerd immediately went to the lead, rapidly developed a small distance ahead of the others and comfortably won, followed by Ferte and Luostarinen. David was keeping fifth position from the start and was able to finish fifth as well. However, then the commissioners started to execute their authority again and due to several times exceeded maximum speed limit Faure was disqualified from the fourth place and Bösiger from the fifth. David got a 20-second time penalty for double violation of the rules but this changed nothing with regard his fifth place. Just a single last step remained to finalize a fantastic success of our team. Unfortunately, the hopes for Gerd's total success had faded away even before the green lights for the start went on. Just after entering the pace lap Gerd was reporting over the radio that he probably suffered an engine failure because he could not achieved full performance. Surprised spectators could not understand how the whole pack of competitors was able to overtake Gerd right after the start. David was doing an excellent job as if he was trying to compensate for the unfortunate failure of his team mate. He started very fast and assumed a position behind Ferte and Luostarinen. His performance was faultless during the whole period of 12 laps behind the leading pair. Step-by-step, by tenths of seconds he was increasing the distance from Albacete, who had been struggling very much in the beginning. Interestingly enough, even Gerd was able to keep the pace with the group, and in the end his delay behind the winner was less than 14 seconds. His engine suffered from seizing of the injector leading to the total failure of the third cylinder. Thus he was missing about 300 hp but one could recognize it at the start only! The brilliant performance of David was further highlighted by the commissioners. Just prior to the podium they imposed Ferte because of repeated exceeding of the speed limit. Therefore he dropped from the first place to the fifth. Then they had to look hastily for the Spaniard to complete the podium, because he was already managing the departure of his team. A great applause by all the guests in the paddock was a beautiful reward for David's lifetime success.

After seven events Gerds holds the third place and David the sixth.
