Zolder

Eighth Event of the European Truck Circuit Racing Cup 2003

Weathermen had predicted the advent of the Indian summer for the Zolder race, and their forecast proved to be a hundred percent right. As a matter of fact, weather plays a crucial role in Zolder, as the circuit is dangerous enough as it is, without having to be wet. The Hahns, both father and son, or their fellow countryman Bernau could tell you a lot about that. Even Martin Koloc's memories of the circuit are not all rosy, and Martin must recall an accident that could have cost him the champion's title whenever he comes here. Driving at full speed during a test practice session, he had hit a concrete wall, damaging his truck so much that his rivals basically wrote him off. However, his mechanics made a performance of traditional Czech skillful hands and Martin had ultimately won.

After a foggy night, the track was quite wet in some places during the first practice session on Saturday, but was drying fast. That seemed to suit David best, and he scored the fastest lap time as the practice was coming to its end. Gerd's and Antonio's Buggyras followed closely behind. In the second practice round, the order of the first three drivers was reversed, but the last free practice session was won again by David. Surprisingly enough, Adam Lacko's Tatra finished second, beating Gerd in the third place and Antonio in the fourth. The measured practice was also dominated by Buggyra, although the places at the top changed hands several times. However, it was Antonio that was in the lead most of the time, and he also secured the pole position for the qualification race on Sunday, outrunning David and Gerd, who had the most difficulties of the whole trio, snatching the third place from Lacko just a few moments before the reserved time of forty minutes expired.

The Sunday sun was smiling upon David's fastest time as early as in the morning warm-up round, and it seemed that it would be shining upon his success in the qualification race as well. He indeed had taken the lead before the pack reached the first corner, but following a minor collision with Antonio, he found himself at the outer edge of the track and had to brake hard in order not to finish in the safety sand trap. Antonio and Gerd were lightning-quick to exploit the situation, sneaking their way to the first two positions. David then had to fight hard to repel continuous attacks of Östreich, but the duel came to an early end, with Östreich's truck finishing helpless in the sand. However, a collision between the two drivers damaged the turbo-blower on David's vehicle. Yet he continued circling the track at an easy pace, finishing sixth and collecting precious points for his efforts. It was Antonio who won the race before Gerd, who put in a solid performance, not wanting to risk any collision and loss of points with Östreich out of the race.

Soon after the start of the cup race, there was quite a mob scene in the first corner, where Gerd lost a lot, dropping to the end of the pack. On the other hand, it was the young racing driver, Adam Lacko, who weaved his way through the colourful gaggle to the very top of the pack, closely followed by Antonio. David was initially circling on the fourth position, behind Luostarinen, but getting closer to him, and he succeeded in overtaking him by the end of the second lap. Next, Antonio made a mistake resulting in an undesired excursion away from the track, which dropped him even behind valiantly fighting Gerd. The latter's truck was very damaged, and Gerd was trying to cover as many laps as possible in order to make his way the rankings and get points at least for the last seventh place. Neither was fortune smiling upon David - while holding the second place, he reported a turbo-blower malfunction again, but he too wanted to cover as much distance as possible. Even Lacko could not enjoy his historical triumph, being deprived of it by a minor technical fault. So, it was ultimately Östreich who collected the golden wreath on the podium. Lacko finished second, having succeeded in defending his position against Antonio. In spite of losing a lap or two, David and Gerd grabbed essential cup points, earning Martin Koloc's praise of their professional performance in the pits.

In the overall standings, Gerd's lead before Östreich has dropped to seven points, David is now losing five points to Antonio in the third place.
